BOMA (Building Environmental Standards)

BOMA BESt is the leading environmental certification program for commercial buildings. Addressing an industry need for realistic standards for energy and environmental performance of existing buildings based on accurate, independently verified information, the program provides a blueprint for making properties more environmentally responsive and energy efficient while reducing operating costs.

Requirements

Using the BOMA BESt program, each building qualifying will be awarded a certificate and recognition material in recognition of their efforts. All entrants will be subject to a site visit and verification process. Certification must be renewed every three years to ensure that the standard of the performance is maintained.

Awards

BOMA BESt recipients are automatically entered into the BOMA Toronto's annual Earth Awards program. Earth Awards will be presented to the highest scoring BOMA BESt certification in each of the Office square footage categories (i.e. under 100,000 sq. ft., etc.) as well as the Shopping Centre, Light Industrial and now Multi-Unit Residential Building(s) (MURBS) categories.

Eligibility

  • Only BOMA BESt recipients are eligible to be considered for the BOMA Toronto Earth Award.
  • There is no limit to the number of buildings a property management firm or owner may enter.
  • The building must be owned or managed by a BOMA Toronto member.
  • The building must be at least two years old from the date of occupancy of the first tenant by the submission deadline date.
  • At least 50% of a building's space must be used as office space to be considered for all categories except the Industrial category which must have more than 5% office area. The Shopping Centre category and the Multi-Unit Residential Building(s) (MURBs) category which must be at least 50% occupied.
  • Eligible categories include: Office, Shopping Centre, Light Industrial, and Multi-Unit Residential Building(s).

Recognition

The BOMA Toronto Earth Awards will be presented at the annual BOMA Toronto Celebration of Excellence Dinner. BOMA BESt certificates will be presented at the time of certification.
