Global Adjustment Workshop - Virtual Classroom

Tuesday, May 12, 2020 | 9:00am - 10:30am

Abstract:

What is your Class A / Class B strategy? You need to know your options to prepare for the June 15 the  deadline. As defined by the IESO, the GA is the component on your electricity bill that covers the cost of building new electricity infrastructure in the province, maintaining existing resources, as well as providing conservation and demand management programs. It is a regulatory mechanism introduced in 2009 as part of Ontario’s Green Energy Act to eliminate coal-based generation and to encourage greening the power system through conservation, demand response and cleaner generation, sources but it has evolved to the point where it now exceeds the cost of energy itself. GA charge applies to any customer that have an average monthly demand over 1 MW.

The Regulation allows commercial consumers (Class “A” with peak demand greater than 1MW) to choose how the GA is charged, allowing them to be billed based on their consumption during the top five peak demand hours. While this creates an opportunity for companies to save hundreds of thousands of dollars by implementing strategies to reduce or offset their load during these peak hours, it also creates much confusion in the industry. Global Adjustment is relevant to any commercial customer who pays the spot market price or who has signed a contract with a licensed electricity retailer.  The best choice for customers depends on numerous factors. The reduced consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic period and related measures bring another dimension to this conversation.

Our speakers will provide insight on their experience, choices and results. This is an industry led workshop with attendance from policy makers and regulators. We urge our members to have representation at this important information session.

What we will cover:

-      Update & overview of Global Adjustment

-      What are the components and costs of GA & what are the processes involved?

-      How does low building occupancy due to COVID-19, impacts HOEP and GA?

-      What is the impact of electricity rate relief on GA?

-      What is the overall impact of COVID-19 on Class A vs Class B GA?

-      What should be the Class A / Class B strategy?

-      Case studies to demonstrate costs and benefits
