EV & Charging Expo Recap: Top Takeaways

05-22-2024 15:33

During the EV & Charging Expo, Caroline Karvonen, our Senior Director Sustainability and Stakeholders Relation moderated a panel exploring the implementation of EV charging in office and retail commercial real estate with Joe Brown from KingSett Capital and Yichao Chen from Cadillac Fairview.

With over 500 chargers at 90 properties across Canada, Joe and Yichao recognized that EV charging at office properties is amenity driven, whereas retail properties is co-benefit of traffic and revenue generation. They confirmed that there is an increasing expectation for chargers at properties and though it is not yet regulated, all properties should start planning for it.

This includes:

  • 1. Engaging your partners and vendors to offer expertise – EV charging is not the core business of CRE and you need your network of collaborators,
  • 2. Verify you have electric capacity – engage your utility providers now.
  • 3. Confirming the need for Level 2 – primarily for office properties versus level 3 – primarily for retail properties.
