PM Springfest: Decarbonization In Action Recap

05-22-2024 15:53

At PM Springfest, Caroline Karvonen, our Senior Director Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations moderated a panel exploring the transition story of turning a 30 year old Class A office building into a Zero Carbon building with Kit Milnes from KingSett Capital and Daniel Stranges from Continual Energy Inc.

They reviewed the overhaul of the building systems, including HVAC redesign, using every opportunity for heat retention/recirculation from the building. The end result? Natural gas was no longer needed.

They also looked at significant achievements - energy performance improved with a 53% reduction in consumption and a 41% reduction in costs, versus 2019 baselines, and the elimination of over 500 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

If you are looking to get started – ensure you have accurate and reliable energy data and review what building systems/assets are at or near end of life.

Top Takeaways:
- Collect real-time data for at least one heating and one cooling season to prepare for decarbonization.
- Time the retrofit for when major mechanical systems are at or near end-of-life.
- Partner with management teams and mechanical design consultants to develop property-level strategies.
